Beauty junkies! Alert! Have you ever consumed/used collagen as part of your beauty regime?
So what exactly is collagen and does drinking soups and eating collagen-rich food really create that doink doink, supple effect in your skin?
First of all, lets understand what is collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body and is found in many of our body parts such as bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. blood vessels, corneas, and teeth.
However, unfortunately, your body produces lesser collagen after the age of 30 and you may notice that your skin will become less firm and fine lines MAY start appearing on your face. Other than age, collagen is also affected by other factors such as smoking and UV light.
While there is no concrete proof that eating collagen-rich foods actually increases collagen production in your body, many people still swear by the effects of it.
So what kind of food can purportedly increase collagen production??
- Vitamin C! This humble but very very important nutrient has been said to play a supporting role in the production of collagen and this vitamin can be found in many citrus fruits such as oranges, grapes and also in dark green leafy vegetables such as kalian, spinach and kangkong.
- Animal products such as bones, gelatine, chicken skin, and pork skin are very high in collagen as they contain this amino acid known as Glycine. Many elderly in the family believes that using these animal parts in the cooking of soups (see picture below) can improve your skin elasticity as well as prevent arthritis! However, many of such animal skins are high in fat and cholesterol and should be avoided if you have health problems.
Till there is concrete research to confirm if collagen rich food does create more collagen in your body, drinking hearty soups and eating fruits and vegetables does provide the feel-good factor and this may help your skin will shine. Happy Mood, Happy Skin!
