More about Migraine

What is it?

Migraine is a type of recurring headache that many of us have experienced before. A study conducted in 2019 has shown that 330000 Singaporeans were affected by it. As the number continues to grow, we should learn more about the health condition and how to manage it.

Symptoms

  • Can be on one or both sides of the head
  • Throbbing pain that may affect us in carrying out our daily chores
  • May last from few hours to a few days
  • Often associated with nausea/ vomiting

Trigger factors

Medications

People may consider the following medications to alleviate the condition:

  • Anti-nausea medications, such as Promethazine (Phenergan) or Prochlorperazine (Compazine)
  • Painkillers, such as Acetaminophen, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen
  • However if there is no improvement or the symptom gets severe, you should always seek medical attention

Prevention

Prevention is always the best cure. One should consider the following steps in changing your diet and lifestyle:

  • Taking meals at regular timing and reduce consumption of alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
  • Avoid smoking.
  • Getting six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep.
  • Managing your stress. Talk to your family and friends, exercise regularly or engage in your favourite pastime activities.
