The holidays are a time of indulgence, with most celebrations centred on having festive food and drinks. Combined with increased sedentary behaviors, these factors can make people more susceptible to weight gain during the holidays.

Let’s take a look at some of the ways you can prevent the potential holiday weight gain while also still enjoying yourself!

1. Organise a healthier potluck

Planning a healthy potluck party is a delightful way to celebrate the holidays without sacrificing your health. Encourage your guests to choose lean proteins, whole grains, and abundant veggies in their cooking. Try serving refreshing mocktails with carbonated water, fresh mint leaves and a variety of fruit slices instead of drinks with sugar.

2. Explore the outdoors

One of the healthier ways to spend the holidays is to turn it into an outdoor adventure.

Nature walks: Enjoy a brisk walk through a park or trail.

Outdoor games: Organize a game of touch football, soccer, or frisbee with friends and family.

3. Turn shopping into cardio

If you’re going to a shopping centre or mall, park far away so that you have to incorporate a little walk before you get to the stores. When you have a choice between taking a lift or escalator or taking steps to your location, always go with the steps. This is an easy way to add a more aerobic element to your shopping trip.

This holiday season, challenge yourself to embrace the joy of movement!
