Every October, on the second Thursday, World Sight Day reminds us to appreciate the gift of vision and take proactive steps to protect it. Our eyes are one of our most important senses, yet we don’t always give them the care they deserve. As long hours in front of screens have become a normal part of daily life, practicing proper eye care is vital to preserve clear vision and prevent discomfort or long-term damage. Here are some simple tips to keep your eyes healthy.

Keep your eyes moist

If your eyes often feel dry or red, it may be due to prolonged screen use or dry environments. Remember to blink regularly to keep your eyes naturally lubricated. You can also use artificial tears or eye drops to relieve dryness.

Rest your eyes

Staring at screens for long hours can strain your eyes. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Taking short breaks helps your eyes relax and reduces fatigue.

Have regular eye check-ups

Even if your vision seems fine, regular eye examinations are important. Eye checks can help detect problems early, such as glaucoma, cataracts, or vision changes that may need correction.

Protect your eyes

When working in dusty environments, doing sports, or spending time under the sun, wear protective eyewear or sunglasses. This helps prevent injuries and protects your eyes from harmful UV rays.

Eat for healthy eyes

A balanced diet rich in carotene, vitamin A, and antioxidants supports good vision. Leafy green vegetables and colorful fruits like kale, spinach, papaya, peaches and citrus fruits provide eye-healthy micronutrients that are naturally found in the retina and help protect against damage from digital screens and artificial lighting.

Manage health conditions

Medical conditions like high blood sugar and high blood pressure can damage the tiny blood vessels in your eyes over time. Keeping these under control through a healthy lifestyle protects your vision.

Optimise your lighting

Too much or too little light can cause eye fatigue, so it’s important to find a balanced level of brightness. When reading, position your light source behind you to prevent shadows. And always adjust your screen’s brightness to a comfortable level that suits your surroundings.

Caring for your eyes doesn’t take much, just keep them moist, rest them regularly, eat a balanced diet, and protect them from harm. A little care each day goes a long way in preserving your precious sight.
