As parents, we tend to worry excessively about our child’s appetite as picky eating would result in malnutrition. However, even though your child’s appetite can fluctuate a lot, their growth is usually not affected by picky eating habits unless there are certain red flag signs. Here are some tips to get our fussy eating child to be more adventurous when it comes to eating.

Helping your child become a healthy eater:

1. Create a stress-free eating environment to help our child to eat more effectively. Don’t force your child to eat and gently encourage them to try something new without any pressure.

2. Let your child sit down and have a meal together as a family. Try to avoid scolding or arguing during mealtimes. If mealtimes are unpleasant, children may try to leave the table as soon as possible.

3. Serve several small portions on a plate. Children are often discouraged when they see a large quantity of food on their plate. Always let your child decide where foods go on their plate.

4. Offer finger foods that your child can feed himself and it’s fine to let him choose what to eat within limits.

5. Involve your children in picking out food and preparing it. These activities allow you to know your children’s food preferences, provide your kids with a feeling of accomplishment and create an interest in food.

6. Go on a picnic or eat a meal outside. Enjoying some al-fresco eating in the garden or at the park will usually make the meal an exciting new adventure.

7. Try offering food first, then drinks after. Children who take large amounts of beverages throughout the day may fill up with it, leaving little room for other foods.

8. Keep mealtimes short. Allow your child a maximum of 30 minutes to eat the meal. After this time, put the food away and let your child leave the table.
